The present invention provides a novel class of naphthylsulfonylalkanoic acid compounds, for example a structure corresponding to the formula: <CHEM> or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. Naphthylsulfonylalkanoic acid compounds of the present invention are useful for prevention or treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, biliary dyskinesia and acute pancreatitis.
