The method produces an internally splined hollow component (5) coaxial to a workpiece axis (A), and with a base (50) at right angles to this axis and a coaxial internally-splined wall (52,54), typically forming a clutch plate support in an automatic gearbox. A coaxial pot portion (554) is cold shaped from the base of a boss (4) which has external splines (42) corresponding to the internal ones (52) to be produced. This portion comprises a coaxial primary inner cylinder (51) of smaller diameter (5510) and a secondary portion of larger diameter (5520) further from the base. Corresponding smaller diameter plain (410) and larger diameter splined (420) portions are formed on the boss. ADVANTAGE - Shapes in only one operation with no subsequent machining.
