The bed (8) of a furnace (1) is conical, with a grate (6) allowing ash to fall into a box (7). Combustion air (A) entering a duct (12) passes through an annular space (11) into a slot between the bed and a brick furnace lining (9), scrubbing (A) ash and dust off the glass walls (13, 14) of the furnace. The air then passes up a cone (3), to pass through a control flap (5) and escape (B). Heating air and ambient air are mixed in a chamber (22), pass through a duct (20) and pass (c) between the circular glass walls (14) of the furnace over the cone (3) inside the casing (2) and through exit passages (30). Single glass curved part-walls (13) slide apart in equal halves for access, outside walls (14), on a slide (26) which is protected by a cover (27).
