The boiler comprises a vessel (1) coated with a lagging (12). This vessel contains an electrolyte (10) such as an aqueous solution of sodium benzoate at a concentration of 60 g/l. In the vessel (1) are immersed three heating bodies (2, 3, 4) surrounded by coils (15-2, 15-3, 15-4) through which a fluid to be heated passes. Each heating body comprises, in a counterelectrode (20) in the form of a parallelepiped reduced to its vertical faces, with two intermediate partitions, which define three similar parallelepipedal cells, three electrodes (21, 22, 23) made up of rectangular plates joined to the three phases (51, 52, 53) of an electrical mains network through a whole-wave switch device (24). A thermometer probe (14) is coupled to a pilot unit (16) which actuates the switching devices. The power density dissipated in the cells is substantially constant. The electrolyte exhibits a conductivity which is markedly higher than that of an industrial water, and this makes it possible to operate at low voltage. <IMAGE>
