This compound is used in the manufacture of synthetic fibres. It exhibits enhanced and durable flame-resistance properties. The prepared polyethylene terephtalate has the following general formula:<IMAGE>where M can be calcium, zinc, cobalt or cadmium; the value of n ranges between 130 and 140; the value of p can be 6.8 or 2 and R1 means chlorine or the -OCOCH3 group. The method involves carrying out simultaneous re-esterification of dimethyl terephtalate and ethylene glycol in the presence of an oligomer containing phosphorus, chlorine and metal or, alternatively, phosphorus and metal.
