The invention relates to an abrasive belt machine making it possible to even the surface of a railway rail (3) after a repair by building up, during which metal will have been deposited by welding. This machine consists of a frame (1) receiving a drive pulley (4), a return pulley (5), an abrasive belt (6), retractable bearing block (10) coming into contact and pressing on the inner face of the abrasive belt, contact keys (2) integral with the frame (1), which bear on the rail on either side of the work region.
<??>The course of the block (10) in the direction of the abrasive belt (6) under the effect of springs (13) is limited by stops (14,15) in alignment with the active face of the abrasive belt (6) on a straight line X Y passing through the bearing points of the reference keys (2) on the rail (3). In this manner, the abrasive belt (6), whose active face is parallel to the direction of the rail, only removes the excess of build-up metal to be evened. The machine is tilted transversely about the rail (3) by means of an operating arm, so as to restore the complete curve of the rail head.
