Process and device for improving the combustion of fuels with gases containing oxygen, and process for manufacturing said device. The combustion process is promoted so that the reactants in the combustion process, either separately or together, or at least one of the reactants are brought into contact with at least one pre-treated surface immediately before combustion. The surface is treated with a substance which hardens or which can be electrically polarized before or during hardening. This substance is deposited onto the surface before or during hardening, or the surface is made from this substance, or the entire structural element is made from this substance. The substance is hardened to form the surface or on the surface or to form the structural element with the surface when the substance is in the electrically polarized state. Alternatively, a substance which can be electrically charged by rubbing or the like and, if necessary, electrically polarized, can be used. The invention results, inter alia, in improved performance and/or reduced wear in motor vehicle engines.
