The effectiveness of the magnetic field between rotor and stator is varied mechanically, e.g. by a conical arrangement instead of the conventional cylindrical one. By alteration of the depth of insertion of the rotor, involving axial displacement of either the rotor or the stator, the size of the air gap and hence the effective magnetic force can be varied in infinitely small steps covering the entire range from zero to max. power. ADVANTAGE - Power of motor or generator can be varied continuously up to max. rating by mechanical effect.
