Di- and trisubstituted phenols are stabilized by the incorporation of a mercaptan, thioether or dimercaptan. In examples, phenols stabilized are a butylated octylphenol, a butylated narylphenol and a proprietary styrenated phenol, the stabilizers being 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, dibenzyl sulphide, n- or tert-dodecyl mercaptan, n-lauryl mercaptan or p-xylenedithiol. Other suitable phenols and stabilizers are specified. U.S.A. Specifications 2,801,981 and 2,830,025 are referred to.ALSO:Unvulcanised diene rubbers are stabilised against oxidation by adding a di- or tri-substituted phenol incorporating a mercaptan, thioether or dimercaptan as colour stabilizer for the phenol. Specified rubbers are natural rubber, polychloroprene, butyl rubber, styrene-butadiene, butadiene-acrylonitrile, polybutadiene and polyisoprene. In examples, various SBR rubbers contain a butylated octylphenol, a butylated nonylphenol or a proprietary styrenated phenol and a colour stabilizer selected from 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, dibenzyl sulphide, n or tet-dodecyl mercapton, n-lauryl mercapton and p-xylene dithiol. Other phenols and sulphur compounds are listed in the Specification. U.S.A. Specifications 2,801,981 and 2,830,025 are referred to. |
