<p>An apparatus for manufacturing a metal pipe clad optical fiber cable which comprises an assembly (2) having a plurality of pairs of rollers for shaping a pulled metal strip (1) and shaping it into a metal pipe by butting both sides of the metal strip (1) against each other, laser welding means (7) for effecting laser welding of the butted portion to produce a sealed metal pipe (1c) and means for introducing an optical fiber (5) into the metal pipe (1a) shaped in this manner, wherein the laser welding means (7) determines a defocusing distance so that the back bead width determined by the outer diameter and thickness of the metal pipe falls within a predetermined range and effects laser welding at a welding rate corresponding to the defocusing distance thus determined.</p> |
