PURPOSE: To make it possible to ensure bidrectional optical transmission and to uniformly amplify a light signal over a long span of optical fibers by using dispersion amplification over such a long span. CONSTITUTION: This system is provided with the optical fibers 11 to 15 having first and second ends and contg. rare earth element-added impurity ions of a dilute concn., signal sources 22, 23 which function the first pumping signal of a second wavelength to induce the induction release at the first wavelength by exciting the state of the added impurity ions and means 21, 24 which optically couple the first pumping signal to the first ends of the optical fibers. The first light signal at the first wavelength is amplified. As a result, the uniform amplification of the light signal over the span of a long distance is made possible by using the dispersion amplification. |
