<p>A crimped multifilament produced from thermoplastic polymer, wherein the birefringence measured at an outer layer part of the constituent monofilament is larger than that measured at a central part thereof, the distribution of the birefringence is such that the position of the smallest birefringence is deviated from the center of the fiber axis, and the number of random crimps per unit inch is at least ten. The degree of crystal growth as determined by wide-angle X-ray diffractometry is at least 0.2 in the case of polyamide and at least 0.4 in the case of polyester. A preferable method of producing the crimped multifilament comprises cooling multifilaments extruded through spinnerets (2) to a given temperature by applying (5) aqueous liquid to one side of each of the multifilaments, stretching (7') them 1.0- to 1.5- fold, and subjecting them to liquid jet treatment (in the case of nylon) or relaxation heat treatment at 105 °C or above.</p> |
