<p>A method and machine (20) for cutting precise sized mults from billets (10) of a nickel based alloy, which involves rotating each billet (10) by means of a chuck (18) while the billet (10) is supported on rollers (12) coaxially in the chuck (18); providing a track (24) parallel to the billet axis (16) and a carrier (22) movable along the track (24), on which carrier (22) is disposed a rotatable saw (54) movable toward and from the axis of the billet (16) to effect cutting, the location of the saw cut being determined by a computer (60) programmed to control a servo motor (58, 56) acting on a screw (57) coupled to the carrier (22) by nut means (22A), the computer (60) being provided not only with basic information as to the density and stated diameter of the billet (10), but with information as to variations in such diameter, detected by sensor means (68) provided on the carrier (22) in proximity with the saw (54), and transmitted to the computer (60).</p> |
