Sand is agitated in a rotated drum 1 by an impact rotor 3 contra-rotating about a concentric axis 2. The rotor has preferably four beating blades 14 which are wave-shaped on their outer edge 15 so as to agitate the sand more efficiently. Sand removed from the rotating wall of the drum 1 by a stripper 5, falls to be impacted by the blades 14, which may be arcuate, sinosoidal, or of saw toothed shape. The blades may be detachably secured, and made of wear resistant chilled cast iron, alloyed cast steel, or a spheroidal graphite casting, or may comprise wear resistant parts of hard steel, sintered material, ceramics, or oxide ceramics. <IMAGE>
