<p>Can opener comprising a cutting wheel (12) and a motor which drives in rotation, by the intermediary of a toothed wheel (2), a shaft (3) carrying a roller (6) mounted in a manner which is both rotary and axially mobile by means of a bidirectional drive mechanism which is constituted by a pin (16) integral with the shaft and capable of displacing along a ramp (17), and a spring (21) intended to keep the pin in contact with the ramp. According the invention, the spring is chosen in such a way as to apply a compression force which is sufficiently large to oppose the rising of the pin along the ramp when the roller rotates unloaded and sufficiently weak to allow the pin to rise up the ramp when the roller is in contact with the bead (9) of a can (11).
