A longitudinal magnetic-tape system comprises cassettes (4) and analog recorders (1) comprising analog magnetic heads (15) with which analog information can be recorded in and/or read from longitudinal tracks on a magnetic tape (5) accommodated in the cassette (4). The system also comprises digital recorders (2) comprising digital magnetic heads (25) with which digital information can be recorded in and/or read from longitudinal tracks on said magnetic tape accommodated in said cassette, which digital recorders (2) are compatible with said analog recorders (1) to such an extent that the analog information recorded on a magnetic tape (5) in the cassette (4) of the system by an analog recorder (1) belonging to the system can at least be read with magnetic-head means (25) of the digital recorders (2) belonging to the system.
