PURPOSE:To enhance the reinforcing effect of fibers and to obtain excellent characteristics by constituting the sintered body of a mullite-base phase, a reinforcing fiber-base phase and the zirconia phase interposed at the grain boundaries between these two phases. CONSTITUTION:This composite mullite-base sintered body is constituted of the mullite-base phase, the reinforcing fiber-base phase and the zirconia phase interposed at the grain boundaries of the mullite-base phase and the fiber-base phase. The above-mentioned fiber-base phase consists of any of mullite fibers; alumina fibers; fibers of the carbide, carbonitride, or carbooxynitride or oxynitride or carbooxide of silicon or titanium; and carbon fibers. The volumetric fraction of these fibers in the sintered body is preferably 3 to 40vol.%. The above-mentioned zirconia phase is formed by the composite sintering of the above-mentioned fibers coated with zirconia and the mullite-base constituting raw materials and the thickness of the zirconia phase is preferably 10 nm to 10 mum. |
