A method for the preparation of N-(2- alkoxyethyl)-2',6'-diethylaniline of formula (I) comprises reacting N-(2-bromoethyl)-2',6'-diethylamiline of formula (II) with alkylalchol of formula R-OH. In the formulas, R= C1-3 alkyl, C3-4 alkenyl, cyclopropyl or cyclopropylmethyl. Pref. the molar ratio of alkylalcohol to N-(2-bromoethyl)-2',6'-diethylaniline is 3- 30 and the reaction temp. is 85-130 deg.C. (I) may be used as an intermediate for the synthes- is of N-substd. chlorocetanilide useful as a herbicide.
