BENZOYL ACETIC ESTER DERIVATIVES AND THERE OF METHOD

Benzoyl acetic ester derivs. of formula (I) are prepd. by halogenating 4,5- dihalo-2-nitrobenzoic acid of formula (II) and reacting the obtained intermediate with alkylmalonate under reflux in the presence of metal alkoxide. In (I), R= methyl, ethyl or isopropyl; X= F or Cl. Pref. the halogenating agent is thionylchloride, phosphorous trichloride or phosphorous pentachloride. Cpds. (I) are useful intermediates in the preparation of antibacterial quinolone derivatives.
