The invention relates to a portable electronic device for timing the cross-country course of equestrian competition termed "eventing". The device allows the timing to one hundredth of a second of competitors leaving separately at regular intervals defined such that there is a maximum of 4 competitors on the course. It also allows the timing of showjumping competitions especially events in two phases, the second combined, as well as of any course events with several competitors leaving at intervals. This device produced in several versions includes a cabinet containing an electronic assembly with 4 microprocessors, 4 displays, push buttons, switches etc. and, for the most complete version, a keypad, a fifth microprocessor, a fifth display, an external or built-in printer, an output for the remote control of a giant display panel. It is controlled by manual keys or electric or radio signals produced by two photoelectric barriers, one at the start and the other at the finish. <IMAGE>
