A process for preparing 3-aminomethane sulfonanilide of formula (I) comprises (a) dissolving 3-nitroaniline of formula (II) in toluene or xylene, (b) reacting the dissolved 3- nitroaniline with methane sulfonyl chloride in the presence of N,N- dialkylaniline to obtain 3-nitromethane sulfonanilide of formula (III), and (c) reducing (III) in the presence of HAc and H2O. Cpd. (I) is useful as an intermediate in the prodn. of azo dyes.
