The subject of the present invention is a device and a method for reconditioning vehicle shock absorbers. It consists of the combination, on the one hand, of a striated cone (7) intended to plug a hole (4) made in the outer casing (5) of the shock absorber, via which the said shock absorber is drained of its used oil, then refilled with fresh oil and pressurised with a gas such as nitrogen, this cone then being welded electrically onto the casing of the shock absorber and, on the other hand, of an appliance making it possible to inject pressurised gas and install the said cone, and consisting of a body which can be applied firmly against the casing of the shock absorber by virtue of clamping means (9, 10, 11) and provided with a cylindrical bore (2) emerging in an opening which caps the cone and which is surrounded by a seal (8), this body including an adjustable pressurised gas inlet (12) and being provided with a movable piston (3) which can be moved in the cylindrical bore towards the shock absorber and has the dual role, once the desired pressure has been reached, of driving the striated cone into the shock absorber thereby making it leaktight, and simultaneously of cutting off the arrival of gas.
