The windscreen wiper device, with non-circular sweep, comprises a drive head (2) given a reciprocating rotational movement, and a windscreen wiper arm (6) mounted so that it can slide in its longitudinal direction with respect to this head (2), this arm being driven in the general reciprocating rotational movement of the head, and furthermore being given a reciprocating translational movement with respect to the head. The wiper-holding arm (6) is mounted with a freedom of rotation about its longitudinal axis relative to the head (2), and interaction means (11) are provided between the arm (6) and the head (2) to assign to the arm a given angular position about its axis, relative to the head (2), in register with the longitudinal position of the arm (6) such that the windscreen wiper blade (9) carried by the arm (6) remains substantially orthogonal to the surface to be wiped. <IMAGE>
