PURPOSE:To obtain propylene in high purity and yield by dehydrating isopropanol in the presence of a solid catalyst such as gamma-alumina, separating the reaction product into oil and water under pressure, washing the oil component with water and purifying the oil by distillation. CONSTITUTION:Gaseous isopropanol is supplied to a solid catalyst such as gamma-alumina and reacted at 200-450 deg.C preferably under pressure of 15-20kg/cm<2>G to obtain a reaction product composed mainly of propylene and water. The product is left resting at 20-50 deg.C and 10-20kg/cm<2>G to separate an oil layer composed mainly of propylene and a water layer. The oil layer is distilled to obtain a high purity propylene free from water. The distillation purification is carried out preferably by using a plate column packed with porous plates. The raw material to be used in the present process is preferably isopropanol produced by proper method from acetone obtained as a by-product of cumene process for the production of phenol. |
