A process for preparing 3-aminomethane sulfonanilide of formula (I) comprises (a) dissolving 3-nitroaniline of formula (II) in an organic solvent selected from tetrahydrofurane, dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide or acetone, (b) reacting the dissolved (II) with methane sulfonyl chloride in the presence of pyridine to obtain 3-nitromethane sulfonanilide of formula (III), and (c) reducing (III) with Fe, Zn or sodium sulfide in the presence of HAc and H2O. Cpd. (I) is a useful intermediate in the production of azo dyes.
