Prodn. of substd. pyrimidines (I) comprises cyclising an alkanoylimido-carbamoylacetate (II) in the presence of an acid acceptor at 0-150 deg.C. and opt. in a diluent. In the formula R1, R2 = alkyl. Starting materials (II) are also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - Cpds. (I) are intermediates for insecticides. The method avoids the expensive starting materials and/or unsatisfactory yields of DE 3704689, DE 2209554, DE 2412903 and CH 605824. E.g. yields in the method are 70% compared with less than 20% yields in CH 605824.
