The invention concerns a process for bit-oriented data transmission using a high-level data-link control (HDLC) protocol. To increase the Hamming distance to the flag of the HDLC protocol, it is proposed that, at the transmission end, before the HDLC controller, two consecutive bits in the data field are each converted into a tuple codeword comprising more than two bits, one codeword having 0 bits and the three others only one 1-bit each. At the receiver end, after the HDLC controller, the codewords are converted back into two consecutive data-field bits. Using tuple and quadruple codewords, a Hamming distance of d = 3 and 4, respectively, can be obtained.
