The inlet and outlet ports (3,4) of a lift-valve (2) meet at a magnetically controlled seal (5,20) which is normally closed. The seal is maintained by a spring between it and a fixed permanent magnet (22) and opened by a second permanent magnet (19) holding the seal stem (19) which raises it when a DC solenoid (18) is briefly energised thus latching the two magnets together. The magnets are unlatched when the solenoid is re-energised by a reversed current. ADVANTAGE - Electrical efficiency and freedom from continuous excitation.
