The earth scanning satellite system has a number of geostationary satellites providing data from cameras, laser scanners, infrared sensors etc. Each satellite has a processor network (2) that receives inputs from the sensors (5,7,9,12,14,16,18,20), each of which connects with a processor (6,8,13,15,17,19,21). In the case of the camera an associated controller (10) is used to vary the operating condition. The platform position is also regulated by a controller (22,23,24). A ducking mechanism (25,26) allows connection with a supply satellite unit. ADVANTAGE - Has onboard processing of received data.
