A wire saw comprises a cut length sawing wire (30), the two ends of which are fastened to two equal-sized cranks which rotate at the same speed, thereby imparting a reciprocating linear motion to the wire. The cranks are designed as the planet wheels (8, 18) of two planetary gears (28, 38). The two planetary gears (28, 38) are driven by sun wheels (1, 11) with which the planet wheels (8, 18) engage so that they rotate about their axis (9, 19) and roll around fixed ring-gears (6, 16), the pitch diameter of which is twice that of the planet wheels (8, 18). The length of the sawing wire (30) between the two securing pins (27, 37) is equal to the distance between the parallel median axes (29, 39) of the two planetary gears (28, 38). The two securing pins (27, 37) move along a line which intersects the two median axes (29, 39) at right angles to the latter. During sawing, the distance between the two securing pins (27, 37) varies only slightly, and therefore the sawing wire (30) is not subjected to any dynamic stress, but only to a static stress due to clamping.
