The invention relates to a process for the production of tertiary alkyl ethers comprising the steps of: (a) cracking a long chain hydrocarbon feed in the presence of a zeolitic catalyst to produce a cracker effluent stream comprising G3-06 alkenes, a portion of which consists of isoalkenes; (b) (1) reacting the isoalkene content of said cracker effluent stream with a lower aliphatic alcohol in the presence of an etherification catalyst and separating the tertiary-alkyl ethers produced to form a product stream, and (2) contacting the unbranched alkene content of said cracker effluent stream with an isomerization catalyst to form an isoalkene-enriched stream, and feeding said isoalkene-enriched stream to step (b) (1), steps (b) (1) and (b) (2) being conducted concurrently or sequentially in either sequence; and (c) subjecting the lean effluent stream from step (b) comprising lower unbranched alkenes, to oligomerization to form an oligomerizate-containing recycle stream, and feeding said oligomerizate-containing recycle stream to step (a). |
