The invention provides herbicidal compositions comprising relates to new substituted 1,2,4-triazolo-[4,3-a]pyridines of general formula I <CHEM> and substituted N'-(2-pyridyl)hydrazones of general formula II <CHEM> in which A and R<1><-><4> have the meanings given in the description. Many compounds are novel and form part of the invention.
