PURPOSE:To improve density by successively heating a case charged with a formed carbon and an impregnating material in a vacuum impregnating station and high-pressure impregnating and carbonizing station, melting the impregnating material, impregnating the formed carbon body therewith and carbonizing the impregnating material. CONSTITUTION:A sample case 30 containing a porous formed carbon body 8 and an impregnating material such as tar pitch or a resin therein is transferred to a vacuum impregnating station (A) with a crane 67, placed on a support pedestal 64 and then covered with a bell- shaped furnace 61 and evacuated to provide a vacuum state. The sample case is subsequently heated to about 200-300 deg.C with a heater 62 to melt the impregnating material 9 and carry out vacuum impregnation treatment of the formed carbon body 8. The bell-shaped furnace 61 is then removed with the crane 67 and conveyed under a high-pressure vessel 50 with a conveying cart 57 for transferring the sample case 30 to a high-pressure impregnating and carbonizing station (B) to fit the sample case 30 into the high-pressure vessel 50. High- pressure Ar gas is then introduced from the high-pressure vessel 50 into the sample case 30 to impregnate the formed carbon body 8 with the impregnating material 9, which is then heated with a heater 70 to further increase the temperature. Thereby, the impregnating material 9 is subsequently carbonized at a prescribed temperature. After completing the carbonization, the Ar gas is released to cool the carbonized material and afford a high-density carbonaceous material. |
