A secondary or tertiary alcohol is prepared by a) reacting an olefin with a perfluorinated carboxylic acid in the presence of a catalytic system comprising a ruthenium and/or palladium compound and a very strong acid to give a secondary or tertiary ester; and b) subsequently reacting the ester with water to afford the corresponding secondary or tertiary alcohol. |
