Thermoplastic aromatic polycarbonates having average molecular weights &upbar& Mw of at least 10,000 which contain bifunctional carbonate structural units corresponding formula (I) <IMAGE> (I) in which R1, R2, R3, R4 independently of one another represent hydrogen, a C1-12 hydrocarbon, halogen, Y1, Y2, Y3 independently of one another represent hydrogen, C1-5 alkyl, a C6-12 hydrocarbon radical, at least two of the substituents Y1, Y2 and Y3 not being hydrogen and at least one of the substituents Y1, Y2 and Y3 being C1-5 alkyl, in quantities of from 100 to 1 mol-%, based on the total quantity of difunctional carbonate structural units in the polycarbonate.
