Process for obtaining cis-4-amino-5-chloro-2-methoxy-N-[1- [3-(4-fluorophenoxy)propyl]-3-methoxy-4- piperidinyl]benzamide Comprises subjecting 4-[(4-amino-5-chloro-2-methoxy)- benzamido]-1-[3-(4-fluorophenoxy)propyl]-3- methoxypyridinium iodide (formula II) to a reduction process in an organic solvent using sodium borohydride as the reducing agent in the presence of particular salts of rhodium, nickel or cobalt. The product obtained, cis-4-amino-5-chloro-2-methoxy-N-[1- [3-(4-fluorophenoxy)propyl]-3-methoxy-4- piperidinyl]benzamide (formula I), has useful therapeutic properties as a gastrointestinal prokinetic agent for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux, retarded voiding of the stomach and intestinal pseudo-obstruction. <IMAGE>
