5-Isopropyl-8-methyl-6,8-nonadien-2-one of formula (I), known as solanone, is prepd. by (a) reacting 4-isopropyl glutaraldehyde nitrile of formula (II) with methalyl iodide of formula (III) in the presence of metal catalyst such as Sn or Al, to obtain 5- hydroxy-4-isopropyl-7-methyl-7-octenenitrile of formula (IV), (b) dehydrating (IV) with acid catalyst adsorbed silica-gel to obtain 4-isopropyl-7- methyl-5,7-octadiene of formula (V), and (c) reacting (V) with methylmagnesium bromide in the mixed solvent of ethylether/ benzene. Solanone is useful as a tobacco flavorant and flavor enhancer.
