Internal short circuits generated in rechargeable battery cells due to the build up of microscopic metal bridges, are avoided by insertion of the cell into a unit that causes a high amplitude current transient to be applied. The battery is inserted in a holder that has one pair of contacts (K1,K2) followed by a second pair (K1,K3), coupled to a battery charger (LG). The coupled circuit has a capacitor (C), switch (S) and resistor (R). The capacitor is charged and then discharged to provide a pulse of a few milliseconds duration. The operation is independent of the speed of movement of the cell across the contacts. ADVANTAGE - Avoids short circuits in battery cells.
