The present invention presents a display device which includes two polarisers (3, 10), two electrodes (5, 8), an electrical power supply circuit (11), including a material (6) whose optical activity depends on the electromagnetic field which is applied to it and a photosensitive assembly (7), these being arranged in such a way that the intensity of the rays incident on the assembly (7) influences the state control of the layer (6) which itself controls the transmittance of these rays. The device thus enables a contrast amplifier or reducer to be produced and reacts to low illuminations. This device is intended to be fitted to any optical system. <IMAGE>
