CATALYST FOR REMOVING A PEROXIDE IMPURITY FROM A TERTIARY BUTYL ALCOHOL

PURPOSE: To decrease impurities in tertiary butyl alcohol contaminated with tertiary butyl hydroperoxide and di-tertiary butyl peroxide or the like by bringing the tertiary butyl alcohol into contact with a catalyst comprising Ni, Cu, Cr and Ba at a specified temp. CONSTITUTION: A tertiary butyl alcohol contaminated with tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, di-tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, acetone, methanol and isobutylene is brought into contact with a catalyst comprising nickel, copper, chromium and barium at 80 to 200 deg.C. The treated tertiary butyl alcohol contains <=100 ppm tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, <=100 ppm di-tertiary butylperoxide, <=1 wt.% isobutylene and each <=3 wt.% acetone and methanol. Thus, impurities are removed.
