PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate for agricultural chemical in high yield by reacting an 4-chlorophenyl acetic acid ester with an isopropyl halide in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and phase- transfer catalyst while carrying out dehydration. CONSTITUTION:When a 4-chlorophenyl acetic acid ester is reacted with an ispropyl halide in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and phase-transfer catalyst, the reaction is carried out while removing water produced as a by- product during reaction to provide >=-isopropyl-4-chlorophenyl acetic acid ester. Azeotropic dehydration method is preferably used from the aspect of workability as the dehydration method. This method is good in yield and further industrially advantageous, because special solvent is not used therein and the method is excellent also in workability. |
