A fibre optics connector (2) for optically connecting an optical cable (4) to an active electro-optical device (6) comprises a body (10) having a base (12) for mounting on a circuit board (8), an optical cable clamping beam (14), a receptacle (16) for the optical device (6) and a pair of opposed support lugs (18) pivotally supporting an operating lever (20). In use, the lever (20) is pivoted to a cable receiving position in which a flat (86) on the lever (20) is in register with the beam (14). The optical cable (4) is then inserted between the beam (14) and the base (12) and the operating lever (20) is pivoted to a cable retention position, in which cam surfaces (82) of the lever (20), engage the beam (14) on each side of the cable (4) to press the beam (14) down against the cable (4), the beam (14) being thereby elastically deformed so as to store energy for long life retention of the cable (4). The lever (20) has spigots (78) which can be inserted alternatively, into first channels (66) or second channels (64) in the support lugs (18) so as to allow of the lever being operated either from the top of the connector (2) or from the insertion direction of the cable (4). <IMAGE> <IMAGE> |
