In the device, the running network is formed from grip element carriers (5) made of rubber or plastic and chain length sections (3 and 4) connecting the latter to one another. The grip element carriers (5) consist of longitudinal pieces (15 and 16) which are oriented essentially flush with the chain length sections (3 and 4) and X-shaped spacing elements (17) which keep these longitudinal pieces at a distance from one another. The longitudinal pieces (15, 16) are equipped with spikes (7) in the region of grip elements (19) of log-like construction. Some of the grip element carriers (5) have extensions (11) to which the ends (9) of retaining arms (8) are connected in articulated fashion, the said arms pressing the running network resiliently into the region of the tread (1) of the vehicle wheel.
