This invention relates to antibacterial compounds of the formula <IMAGE> wherein A is hydrogen or an acyl group <IMAGE> Ra is a negative charge; Rz is hydrogen, C1-C4 alkoxy, C1-C4 alkylthio, or a formamido group, -NHCHO; and -N(+) 3BOND Y is a quarternary ammonium group that may be acyclic, cyclic, or a combination of the two, and may contain on or more additional hetero atoms selected from nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen; and pharmaceutically acceptable non-toxic salts thereof.
