Disclosed are novel compounds characterized by a 2-substituent of the formula - S - A - I in which A is cyclopentylene, cyclohexylene or C2-C6 alkylene optionally substituted by one or more C1-C4 alkyl groups. Such compounds are useful as intermediates for preparing carbapenem derivatives characterized by a 2-substituent of the formula in which A is as above and represents a quaternized nitrogen-containing aromatic heterocycle. These carbapenem compounds are potent antibacterial agents. Also disclosed are processes for the preparation of the novel intermediate compounds.
