FLAME PETARDANT COMPOSITION FOR EXPANDABLE STYRENE RESIN BEAD AND ITS USE

PURPOSE:To prepare the title flame retardant compsn. which gives expandable styrene beads an excellent flame retardance and dimensional stability without degrading the properties inherent in a styrene resin by compounding a brominated arom. compd. with tetrabromocyclooctane in a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION:The title flame retardant compsn. comprises 2-90wt.% brominated arom. compd. having an m.p. of 70-120 deg.C and 98-10wt.% tetrabromocyclooctane. Examples of the brominated arom. compd. are tribromophenyl allyl ether and diglycidyl ether of tetrabromobisphenol A. The brominated arom. compd. with an m.p. lower than 70 deg.C tends to cause problem of shrinkage and dimensional instability the resulting flame-retardant styrene resin moldings. The compd. with an m.p. higher than 120 deg.C can not be sufficiently impregnated into styrene resin beads, failing in giving flame-retardant expandable styrene resin beads of uniform quality.
