PURPOSE: To detect low-energy radioactive rays in clothes reliably by pressing the clothes toward first and second radioactive ray detectors by first and second energization skids. CONSTITUTION: The detection device has a conveyer for gripping and compressing an article while feeding it to areas before radioactive ray detectors 34 and 36. The upstream and downstream detectors 34 and 36 are provided along the path of conveyers 10 and 30, and one of the detectors is separated and arranged at the downstream side of the other. Also, while the clothes cross the detectors 34 and 36, skids 38 and 40 for maintaining pressure applied to the clothes essentially constantly are provided along the traveling path of the conveyers 10 and 30 opposite to each detector. Then, the clothes are placed on the conveyer 10, and the device is controlled by a control panel 12. When the device detects radioactive contamination in the clothes, a visible/audible alarm device provided on the panel 12 operates and sends a signal that the clothes further need to be decontaminated.
