The present invention relates to a light-polarisation device for flat screens and, more generally, for optical devices acting on polarised light. The main advantage of the device, which forms the subject of the present invention, is to polarise light of all wavelengths without loss of energy. In order to do this, it comprises a polarisation splitter (1, 2, 3, 4), an optical rotary joint (5), and a means for recombining the rays. According to the embodiments, the polarisation splitter is composed of an assembly of thin plates, of a multilayer treatment of a thin plate, of a birefringement material. The means for recombining the polarised-light beams are likewise composed of thin plates, of a mirror, of a diffuser, of a ground-glass screen or of optical lenses. The device can be used both with transmitting flat screens and with reflective or partially reflective (transflective) flat screens. The main applications of the device are in video projection and in portable equipment having passive flat display screens. <IMAGE>
