The extensometer (26) includes points (27,28) coming into contact with the object (2) to be studied, such that the relative displacement of these points gives a measurement of the deformation of the object to be studied. According to the invention, the points (27,28) of the extensometer are jointly supported by mobile equipment (37), itself suspended by means capable of giving a zero apparent weight to the equipment/extensometer assembly and of following the movements of the object to be studied without essentially exerting a return force thereon. In this manner, unchanged relative positioning of the points with respect to the object to be studied is ensured in the event of displacement of the latter, the extensometer is joined to the testpiece without parasitic forces and the extensometer and the framework of the test machine are decoupled. The preservation of the points of contact and of the extensometer/testpiece angle during testing is thus perfectly ensured. The means capable of giving a zero apparent weight to the equipment/extensometer assembly comprise a float (38) immersed in a liquid and ballasted (39) until balance of the weight of the equipment/extensometer assembly is obtained. <IMAGE>
