Forming thermoplastic backed carpets - using tool having movable segments at areas of high carpet extension to give more uniform heat extraction and reduce cycle times

Heated carpet strip is placed in the lower half of a tool which is then closed by an upper half. Areas of the carpet which are subjected to higher elongation stresses can be locally pressed with a higher pressure with the result that more uniform cooling of the carpet is achieved and therefore processing time is reduced. The tool comprises upper and lower halves which are segmented to enable higher local pressures to be applied at desired areas. USE/ADVANTAGE - For forming carpet into shapes which can be used e.g. in cars over the drive shaft funnel and improves the uniformity of heat extraction to give shorter cycle times.
